Joint research on three sites
The Kargaly gorge hydropower project, the Alatau City new town and the nuclear plant site in the Zhambyl region. The agreement is being prepared for signature.

A delegation of the Institute of Seismic Safety LLP held working talks with representatives of the Institute of Geology of the China Earthquake Administration. The main purpose was to develop scientific and technical cooperation in seismic hazard assessment, engineering seismology and the safety of strategically important facilities.
Priority areas of joint work
Hydropower project in the Kargaly gorge
The parties discussed joint research on the baseline seismicity of the hydropower siting area, the organisation of field geological and geophysical work, and mechanisms for exchanging scientific materials, geological and seismological data.
Alatau City new town project
Particular attention went to the integrated assessment of the territory's baseline seismicity, the analysis of geological and engineering-geological conditions, and scientific and methodological support for the new city's construction project. Both sides expressed interest in applying modern international approaches to natural-risk assessment at the territorial planning stage.
Nuclear power plant construction project
In discussing the prospective nuclear power plant in the Zhambyl region, the parties considered the organisation of seismic monitoring, assessment of the baseline seismicity of the construction site, and the development of a modern scientific and methodological framework for the seismic safety of nuclear facilities in line with international requirements.
What was agreed
The parties reached agreement in principle on joint research across all three areas, and confirmed mutual interest in long-term scientific and technical cooperation, exchange of experience, joint research and specialist training.
Preparations are under way to sign a formal agreement on scientific and technical cooperation, which will underpin joint projects in seismic hazard assessment, engineering seismology and the safety of strategically important facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
