The 12th Tianshan International Symposium on Earthquake Sciences
From 14 to 18 September 2026 the city of Urumqi (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China) hosted the 12th Tianshan International Symposium on Earthquake Sciences, organised by the Urumqi Institute of Central Asian Earthquake Research, China Earthquake Administration.
The symposium, hosted in turn by the China Earthquake Administration and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has been running since 1992. Eleven symposia have been held over that period in Almaty (Republic of Kazakhstan) and Urumqi (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China). The 12th continued years of scientific cooperation between specialists from Kazakhstan, China and other Central Asian countries in studying the seismicity and seismic safety of the Tianshan region.
The Institute of Seismic Safety was represented by its director R. A. Gashimov and chief researcher A. T. Danabayeva, PhD in geology and mineralogy. They presented papers on current questions of induced seismicity and on the seismicity of the Dzhungar-Boro-Khoro region. Zhengis Bekasyl, backend and ML engineer at AG Digital KZ, also took part. The programme closed with a field trip to the epicentral zone of the 1906 Manas earthquake, where participants examined active tectonics, seismogenic deformations and traces of one of the largest historical earthquakes of the Tianshan.
Taking part was another step in strengthening scientific cooperation between Kazakh and Chinese researchers working to improve the seismic safety of the Tianshan region. The institute thanks the China Earthquake Administration, the Institute of Geology and the Urumqi Institute of Central Asian Earthquake Research for the organisation of the event, their hospitality and their support.
